Midlife Journey

For those of us at midlife the passage forwards can best be seen as a journey. We will have movement both forwards and backwards as we explore our pasts, and decide what to carry forward from them and what we need to leave behind. We know others have made this journey before us and are happier for having done so, but there are also times when we doubt the wisdom of ever having set out.

We can also think of it as a labyrinth, as for centuries people have walked labyrinths to represent their spiritual or inner journey through life. Unlike a maze which makes you focus on how to get out, a labyrinth only has one path, taking you in towards the center and then back out again, much like the passage through midlife. The only choice the walker needs to make is whether to enter or whether to stay outside. People have also used labyrinths to help themselves work through a particularly difficult part life, using them as a place to meditate or pray as their feet simply follow the line.

As a former teacher I am an advocate of preparation, and of reading up ahead of time. In this case my goal was to find information to make the journey through midlife as fulfilling and satisfying as possible. By reading about a destination and the many ways to get there, it is possible to discover things we may miss if we simply follow the most obvious route and try to get there as quickly as possible.

To help you on your way I have constructed a series of sites offering information, ideas and detours you may want to take on your way to post-midlife. This section of the site will give you a quick tour to help you find the information you need.
